Diodon nicthemerus is a small pufferfish species native to temperate marine environments. Known for its distinctive appearance and unique behaviours, this species is suited to experienced aquarists who can provide the specific care it requires.
Temperament and Compatibility: This pufferfish tends to be solitary and can be territorial. It is best kept singly or with carefully selected tank mates that are robust and non-aggressive. Avoid housing with small, slow-moving, or delicate species as it may nip fins or cause stress.
Diet: Diodon nicthemerus is carnivorous and requires a diet rich in meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and specialised frozen or live feeds. Regular feeding of hard-shelled prey items helps maintain beak health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should replicate temperate water conditions with stable parameters and moderate water flow.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperatures between 16-22°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and good water quality with regular changes.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. This species may nip at invertebrates or corals, so it is generally not recommended for reef tanks with sensitive species.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding places using live rock and caves to reduce stress and mimic natural habitat.
