Diodon holocanthus, commonly known as the Porcupine Puffer, is a fascinating and visually striking species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This extra large specimen displays the characteristic spiny body and inflation ability that makes it a standout addition to a mature marine tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and specialised care needs, this species is best suited to experienced aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial. It is best kept singly or with robust tankmates that are not small enough to be considered prey. Avoid housing with delicate or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Requires a varied diet including hard-shelled invertebrates such as molluscs and crustaceans to help wear down its continuously growing teeth. Supplement with frozen or fresh seafood such as shrimp, squid, and clams.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate its growth. A well-established tank with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding is essential.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically aggressive towards corals, it may nip at invertebrates or small fish, so reef compatibility is limited.
Additional Notes: The Porcupine Puffer inflates as a defence mechanism when stressed or threatened. Handle with care and avoid sudden changes in environment to reduce stress.
