Clibanarius rutilus is a popular hermit crab species among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its active behaviour and usefulness in maintaining tank cleanliness. Available in various sizes, these crabs are well suited to reef aquariums and are considered reef safe.
Care and Husbandry: Clibanarius rutilus thrives in stable marine conditions with a salinity of 1.023–1.025 SG and temperatures between 22–26°C. They require a well-established tank with plenty of live rock and hiding places. Provide a varied diet including algae wafers, detritus, and occasional meaty foods to ensure optimal health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is peaceful and compatible with most reef inhabitants, including corals, fish, and other invertebrates. They are reef safe and will not harm corals or sessile invertebrates.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 30 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water parameters. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic their natural environment, and lighting should be suitable for a reef setup.
Additional Notes: Hermit crabs require access to a variety of empty shells to accommodate their growth. Regular monitoring of water quality and stable conditions will ensure longevity and activity.
