Clepticus parrae, commonly known as the Bluehead Wrasse, is a strikingly colourful marine fish native to the western Atlantic Ocean. This small variant is suitable for aquarists with experience in maintaining active and moderately territorial wrasses.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Bluehead Wrasse is generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar-shaped wrasses. It is best housed with other robust species and not with very small or timid fish. Avoid keeping multiple males together unless the tank is very large.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine flakes or pellets formulated for carnivorous marine fish to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, as well as open swimming areas.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow and moderate lighting are suitable to replicate their natural reef environment.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, Bluehead Wrasses may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp or small crabs. Monitor closely if kept in reef setups containing delicate invertebrates.
Overall, the Clepticus parrae is a lively and attractive addition to a suitably sized marine aquarium, offering both colour and activity to experienced marine fish keepers.
