The Brownbanded Bamboo Shark (Chiloscyllium plagiosum) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its manageable size and generally peaceful temperament. This extra large specimen is suitable for experienced hobbyists with ample tank space.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. While hardy, this species requires stable water parameters and a suitably large environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and nocturnal, the Brownbanded Bamboo Shark is best kept with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, mussels, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening to match their natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 gallons (approximately 700 litres) is recommended for an extra large specimen to provide adequate swimming and resting space.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking their natural crepuscular environment.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to replicate their natural habitat without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding places such as caves and overhangs. A sandy substrate is preferred for resting and burrowing behaviour.
Origin: Native to the Indo-West Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 1 metre in length.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may disturb small invertebrates and should not be kept with delicate coral species.
