Chelmon rostratus, commonly known as the Copperband Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning addition to any mature marine aquarium. This large specimen features a distinctive elongated snout and striking yellow and white vertical bands, making it a favourite among experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a well-established tank with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be shy. Best kept singly or in pairs in larger tanks to avoid territorial disputes.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets. Supplement with algae and sponge-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at certain sessile invertebrates, including some corals and anemones. Monitor closely in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure stable water parameters with regular maintenance.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Avoid aggressive tank mates and ensure peaceful community species.
