Chaetodon flavirostris, commonly known as the Yellownose Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized by experienced marine aquarium enthusiasts. This large butterflyfish features a distinctive yellow snout contrasted against a patterned body, making it a captivating addition to a well-established reef or marine tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a carefully managed diet.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised with smaller or very passive species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure tank is mature and stable before introduction.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
