The Collared Butterflyfish (Chaetodon collare) is a visually captivating species prized for its unique patterning and graceful swimming behaviour. This small butterflyfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Compatible with other semi-aggressive or peaceful fish but avoid housing with overly aggressive tankmates. Not reef safe as it may nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared diets designed for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) recommended to provide ample swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with regular water changes and efficient filtration. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4.
Additional Care: Sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes. Quarantine new specimens to prevent disease introduction. Regular observation is advised to monitor health and behaviour.
