Cephalopholis argus, commonly known as the Peacock Grouper, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its distinctive blue-ringed pattern and robust nature. This medium-sized grouper is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its specific care requirements and territorial temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive and territorial. It can be predatory towards smaller fish and invertebrates, so careful tankmate selection is essential.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised marine pellets or frozen foods to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and establishing territories. Position in a tank with compatible species that are not small enough to be considered prey.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
Due to their predatory nature, Cephalopholis argus should not be housed with small or peaceful fish. They thrive in mature aquariums with stable water conditions and ample space. Regular feeding with high-quality meaty foods will support their health and vibrant coloration.
