Calloplesiops altivelis, commonly known as the Comet or Marine Basslet, is a visually stunning fish prized for its unique spotted pattern and graceful swimming behaviour. This DJM bred specimen is available in various sizes, making it suitable for a range of marine aquarium setups.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species is best suited to hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience due to its specific care needs and shy temperament.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but shy, Calloplesiops altivelis can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. It thrives best in a community tank with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with overly boisterous or predatory species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen preparations. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is advised to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding places. Decorate the aquarium with live rock formations, caves, and crevices to mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is suitable, replicating shaded reef environments. Water flow should be gentle to moderate, ensuring good oxygenation without causing excessive stress.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may prey on very small invertebrates or fish fry. Monitor interactions carefully in reef setups.
