Bodianus rufus, commonly referred to as the Red Pigfish Wrasse, is a captivating addition to marine aquariums, prized for its vivid red colouring and dynamic behaviour. This species is best suited to intermediate to advanced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate – requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; may show territorial behaviour especially towards similar species or smaller, passive fish.
Diet: Carnivorous – thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and establishing territory. Suitable for reef aquariums with caution due to semi-aggressive nature.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safe: With Caution – may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Regular water changes and maintaining excellent water quality are essential to keep Bodianus rufus healthy. Avoid housing with very small or passive species to reduce stress and aggression.
