The Queen Triggerfish (Balistes vetula) is a visually stunning species known for its vibrant colours and distinctive body shape. Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, this triggerfish is a popular choice among experienced marine aquarists due to its bold personality and striking appearance.
Care Level: This species is best suited to advanced hobbyists familiar with the specific needs of triggerfish. It requires a well-established, large marine aquarium with stable water parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Queen Triggerfish are known for their territorial and sometimes aggressive behaviour, especially towards smaller or more passive tankmates. They are best housed with similarly sized or robust species. Avoid keeping with small, delicate fish or invertebrates as they may be preyed upon.
Diet: A carnivorous diet is essential, including a variety of meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and prepared marine carnivore diets. Feeding should be varied to ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing, as well as open swimming areas.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not strictly reef safe, some aquarists keep Queen Triggerfish in reef tanks without invertebrates. They may nip at corals or invertebrates, so caution is advised.
