The Arothron stellatus (Yellow Phase) is a large and visually impressive pufferfish species, renowned for its distinctive yellow colouring and intricate patterning. This species is a captivating addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering both personality and unique aesthetics.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially with conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or with robust, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid small invertebrates and slow-moving fish as they may be harassed or eaten.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and prepared frozen foods. Their strong beak requires a diet that helps wear down teeth to prevent overgrowth.
Tank Requirements: Due to their large adult size, a minimum tank volume of 300 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions. A secure lid is essential as puffers are known jumpers.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are critical to support their health.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution – may nip at corals and invertebrates, so not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
This species is best suited for experienced marine aquarists who can meet its specialised care needs and provide a spacious, well-maintained environment.
