Amphiprion frenatus, commonly known as the Tomato Clownfish, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking colouration and manageable size. This small, tank-bred specimen is well-suited for reef aquariums and can thrive with proper care.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Amphiprion frenatus can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar clownfish species but coexists well with a variety of other peaceful marine fish. It is advisable to keep only one per tank or a compatible mated pair to avoid aggression.
Diet: Omnivorous by nature, this clownfish accepts a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and stable water parameters. The aquarium should be well-established with live rock and ideally host an anemone species such as Entacmaea quadricolor (Bubble Tip Anemone) for natural symbiosis, although this is not mandatory.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable water quality with regular monitoring.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, Amphiprion frenatus may occasionally nip at corals or sessile invertebrates, especially if stressed or hungry.
This small tank-bred Tomato Clownfish is an excellent addition to a peaceful marine community, offering vibrant colour and engaging behaviour.
