Amblygobius phalaena, commonly referred to as the Sleeper Banded Goby, is a popular choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a peaceful and active sand-sifting fish. This tank-bred specimen ensures better adaptation to captive conditions and reduces wild collection impact.
Known for its distinctive banded pattern and subtle colouration, the Sleeper Banded Goby is an excellent addition to reef tanks where it helps maintain substrate cleanliness by sifting through the sand bed. It is a generally peaceful species that coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates.
Care and Husbandry
- Temperament: Peaceful and shy, best kept with similarly non-aggressive species.
- Diet: Omnivorous; accepts a variety of prepared foods including frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and high-quality pellet or flake foods. Supplement diet with live or frozen meaty foods to encourage natural foraging behaviour.
- Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to provide ample space for natural behaviour and territory establishment.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4.
- Placement: Provide a sandy substrate for natural sand-sifting activity and ample hiding places such as live rock caves or crevices.
- Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable; moderate water flow preferred to mimic natural habitat.
Compatibility
This goby is reef safe and compatible with a wide range of peaceful fish and invertebrates. Avoid housing with aggressive or highly territorial species to reduce stress.
Additional Notes
Tank-bred Amblygobius phalaena tend to acclimate more readily to aquarium life and show fewer signs of stress compared to wild-caught specimens. Regular feeding and stable water conditions will promote vibrant colouration and active behaviour.
