The Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon) is a popular and visually stunning addition to large marine aquariums. Recognised by its vivid powder blue body, contrasting black face, and bright yellow dorsal fin, this species is a favourite among experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with quality frozen or prepared foods.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong water movement mimics natural reef conditions and supports health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid overcrowding with other tangs to minimise aggression.
Origin: Indian Ocean, primarily around coral reefs.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in captivity.
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may nip at some sessile invertebrates or coral polyps. Careful monitoring is advised when introducing to reef tanks.
