Acanthurus dussumieri, commonly known as Dussumier’s Surgeonfish, is a robust and visually impressive tang species prized by marine aquarists for its striking appearance and active swimming behaviour. This XXXL variant is suitable for experienced hobbyists with large marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced due to size and space requirements.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large, well-structured community tank.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: 500 litres (approximately 110 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming and territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong water movement mimicking natural reef currents is recommended to promote health and activity.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming space along with live rock for grazing and hiding. Position in the mid to upper water column.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safe: With Caution – may nip at some sessile invertebrates or soft corals; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Ensure stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and excellent water quality. Regular maintenance and monitoring are essential for the health of this large tang.
