The Sergeant Major Damselfish (Abudefduf saxatilis) is a striking and robust marine fish native to the Caribbean Sea. Known for its bold black vertical stripes contrasted against a bright yellow and white body, this species adds vibrant colour and dynamic behaviour to suitably sized marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Sergeant Major Damselfish is territorial and can be aggressive, especially in smaller tanks or when kept with more passive species. It is best housed with similarly sized or robust fish to minimise conflict. Avoid keeping with very shy or slow-moving species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and territory establishment.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at corals or sessile invertebrates, especially if underfed or stressed.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in captivity.
