The Zebra Bullhead Shark (Heterodontus zebra) is a fascinating species of marine shark prized for its bold black and white striped pattern. Native to the western Pacific Ocean, this shark is a bottom-dwelling species that thrives in well-maintained, mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a suitably large tank to accommodate its size and natural behaviours.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in very large tanks if multiple individuals are housed. Compatible with other robust, non-aggressive marine fish but avoid small or slow-moving species that may be harassed.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds on a variety of meaty foods including crustaceans, molluscs, and prepared marine shark diets. Regular feeding with high-quality frozen or live foods is essential to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow mimic natural reef environments and help maintain shark health.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places such as caves and rockwork. The substrate should be sandy or fine gravel to protect the shark’s sensitive barbels and underside.
Origin: Western Pacific Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 1 metre (approximately 39 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Zebra Bullhead Shark can be a captivating and rewarding addition to a large marine aquarium, offering unique behaviour and striking appearance.
