The Port Jackson Shark (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) is a fascinating species native to the coastal waters of southern Australia. Recognisable by its blunt head, prominent ridges above the eyes, and distinctive saddle-like markings, this shark is a popular choice for marine aquarists seeking a unique addition to their collection.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and slow-moving, making it compatible with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with small or highly active fish that may be stressed.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including molluscs, crustaceans, and prepared marine carnivore foods. Supplement with live or frozen seafood such as shrimp, squid, and clams to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territorial boundaries.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Avoid intense lighting as this species prefers dimmer environments.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement to simulate natural coastal habitats without causing excessive stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter and resting spots. The substrate should be sandy or fine gravel to accommodate natural behaviours such as burrowing.
Origin: Southern Australia.
Maximum Size: Up to 1.2 metres (approx. 4 feet) in length.
Regular water quality monitoring and a secure tank lid are essential, as Port Jackson Sharks are known to be escape artists. This species is not reef safe and should be kept in fish-only or species-specific setups.
