The Port Jackson Shark (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) is a fascinating species native to the coastal waters of southern Australia. Recognisable by its blunt head, prominent ridges above the eyes, and distinctive saddle-like markings, this small shark adds a unique character to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its specialised dietary needs and tank requirements. It is a nocturnal feeder and requires a diet rich in molluscs, crustaceans, and other meaty marine fare.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and to accommodate its bottom-dwelling nature. The aquarium should have a sandy substrate with plenty of rockwork and caves to mimic its natural habitat and offer hiding places.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Port Jackson Shark is generally peaceful but should be housed with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid keeping with small fish that may be seen as prey.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 22-25°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Additional Notes: This species is not reef safe as it may disturb invertebrates and small fish. It is important to provide a varied diet and monitor feeding to ensure optimal health.
