Orectolobus wardi, commonly referred to as the Australian Wobbegong Shark, is a striking species known for its ornate patterning and flattened body shape. This benthic shark is a captivating addition to large marine aquariums, offering a unique display for advanced hobbyists.
Care Level: Due to its specialised needs and size, Orectolobus wardi is recommended for experienced aquarists only. It requires a well-established, mature system with stable water parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally sedentary and nocturnal, this shark is a solitary species. It can be territorial and may prey on smaller tankmates, so compatibility with similarly sized or larger peaceful species is advised. Avoid housing with small fish or invertebrates.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Orectolobus wardi feeds primarily on meaty foods such as fish fillets, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week, ensuring a varied diet to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 600 litres is recommended to accommodate its potential adult size and provide ample floor space. The aquarium should have a sandy or fine substrate with ample hiding places such as caves or rock formations to mimic its natural habitat.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to support this species’ health.
Origin: Native to Australian coastal waters.
Maximum Size: Can reach up to approximately 1.2 metres in length.
