Hemiscyllium trispeculare, commonly known as the Bamboo Shark, is a fascinating species prized for its unique appearance and peaceful temperament. This extra large specimen is suitable for experienced marine aquarists who can provide the space and care it requires.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive fish. However, due to its size and predatory nature, it should not be housed with very small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Hemiscyllium trispeculare is carnivorous and thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 gallons (approximately 680 litres) is recommended to accommodate the swimming space and territorial needs of this extra large shark. The aquarium should have a sandy substrate to mimic its natural habitat and provide resting areas.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Placement: Provide ample hiding spots using live rock or artificial caves to reduce stress and allow natural behaviour. This species is primarily nocturnal and appreciates dim lighting during the day.
Origin: Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region.
With proper care, Hemiscyllium trispeculare can be a captivating and long-lived addition to a suitably sized marine aquarium.
