The Yellowtail Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is a visually stunning tang species native to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Recognisable by its deep blue body contrasted with a bright yellow tail, this fish adds vibrant colour and dynamic movement to mature marine aquariums.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Yellowtail Tang can coexist with a variety of community fish but may show territorial behaviour towards other tangs or surgeonfish. It is best kept singly or in a large tank with sufficient hiding spaces to reduce stress.
Diet: This species is primarily herbivorous and thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active swimming nature and potential adult size of up to 25 cm, a minimum tank size of 180 litres is recommended. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Stable water parameters and excellent filtration are essential for health and longevity.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Suitable for aquarists with experience in maintaining stable marine environments.
