Acropora selago is a stunning small polyp stony (SPS) coral known for its intricate branching growth and vibrant colouration, making it a prized addition to mature reef aquariums. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for experienced aquarists who can provide the stable, high-quality conditions it demands.
Lighting: This coral thrives under strong lighting, ideally provided by metal halide, T5, or high-output LED systems that simulate natural sunlight. Adequate light intensity is essential to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae and maintain vibrant colours.
Water Flow: Moderate to high water flow is recommended to ensure proper gas exchange, nutrient delivery, and to prevent detritus accumulation on the coral’s surface. Flow should be turbulent rather than direct to avoid tissue damage.
Placement: Position Acropora selago in the upper to middle regions of the aquarium where it can receive optimal light and water movement. Ensure sufficient spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions and allow for healthy growth.
Care Level: This species requires stable water parameters typical of SPS corals: temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.025-1.026 SG, calcium 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Regular monitoring and maintenance are essential.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive coral species that may overgrow or sting it.
Additional Notes: Acropora selago benefits from supplemental feeding with planktonic foods or coral-specific supplements, although it primarily relies on photosynthesis. Patience is required as growth can be moderate under optimal conditions.
