Acropora aspera is a beautiful small polyp stony (SPS) coral prized for its intricate branching and vibrant hues, making it a standout addition to mature reef aquariums. This medium-sized specimen demands stable water parameters and optimal husbandry to flourish.
Care Requirements
- Lighting: Requires strong, high-intensity lighting such as metal halide, T5, or high-output LEDs to support photosynthesis and maintain vibrant coloration.
- Water Flow: Prefers moderate to high water flow to ensure effective gas exchange and removal of detritus, which helps prevent tissue damage.
- Placement: Position higher in the aquarium to maximise light exposure, ensuring adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to avoid aggression and overgrowth.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, calcium 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm.
Compatibility and Reef Safety
Acropora aspera is reef safe with adequate spacing. It can coexist with other SPS corals and reef inhabitants but requires careful placement to prevent stinging or shading neighbouring corals.
Additional Notes
Due to its sensitivity, this coral is recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists experienced in maintaining stable reef environments. Regular monitoring and water quality testing are essential to ensure long-term health.
