The Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) is renowned for its stunning coloration and commanding presence in marine aquariums. This medium-sized, tank-bred specimen offers a vibrant display of deep blues, yellows, and black bands, making it a captivating focal point for mature reef or fish-only marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Emperor Angelfish are semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as they mature. They can be housed with other large, robust fish but may harass smaller or more timid species. Avoid keeping with other angelfish unless the tank is exceptionally large.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to ensure optimal health and colour vibrancy.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents helps maintain fish health and encourages natural behaviour.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. This also supports natural feeding habits and reduces stress.
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture environments, ensuring healthier specimens and reduced wild collection impact.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 40 cm (16 inches) in captivity.
