Diploprion bifasciatum, commonly known as the Barred Soapfish, is a visually striking grouper species prized for its bold black and yellow banded pattern. This large marine fish is best suited to experienced aquarists due to its size and specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally territorial and can be aggressive towards smaller or similarly sized tankmates. Best housed with robust species that can tolerate its assertiveness.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds on meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, fish, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is recommended.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: No. This species preys on smaller fish and invertebrates, making it unsuitable for reef tanks.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are sufficient. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural crevices and reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
With proper care, Diploprion bifasciatum can be a fascinating centrepiece fish that adds bold colour and character to a suitably sized marine aquarium.
