Hippocampus kuda, commonly known as the Kuda Seahorse, is a large and elegant species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This species exhibits a distinctive horse-like head and prehensile tail, making it a fascinating addition to a well-maintained marine tank.
Care Level: Due to their specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality, Kuda Seahorses are recommended for advanced hobbyists with experience in seahorse husbandry.
Temperament and Compatibility: Hippocampus kuda is peaceful and slow-moving, best kept with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid fast or aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food or cause stress.
Diet: These seahorses primarily feed on live or frozen small crustaceans such as mysis shrimp. Frequent, small feedings throughout the day are essential to meet their nutritional needs.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and stable water parameters. The aquarium should include plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae or artificial coral branches to allow the seahorses to anchor themselves.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature between 24-26°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and gentle water flow to mimic their natural habitat.
Reef Safety: Hippocampus kuda is generally reef safe but may consume very small invertebrates, so caution is advised when housing with delicate reef fauna.
With proper care and attention, the Kuda Seahorse can be a captivating and rewarding species for marine aquarium enthusiasts.
