Dactyloptena orientalis, commonly known as the Oriental Flying Gurnard, is a fascinating and visually impressive marine fish prized for its large, wing-like pectoral fins that it can flare dramatically. This species is native to the Indo-Pacific region and is a bottom-dwelling predator that adds unique movement and character to a marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably large aquarium to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may be shy. It is best kept with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and other marine protein sources. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and a sandy substrate for natural behaviour. Provide plenty of hiding places and low to moderate water flow.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Place near the bottom of the tank where it can rest and forage. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not typically harmful to corals, the Oriental Flying Gurnard may disturb small invertebrates and should be monitored closely in reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
