The Naso annulatus, often referred to as the Naso Tang or Ringtail Surgeonfish, is a visually impressive marine fish prized for its unique body shape and striking colouration. This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its size and specific care requirements.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This tang requires stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spots and swimming room. Compatible with a range of other peaceful marine fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its potential size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank volume of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate to strong water flow mimics natural reef environments and supports the fish’s health.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming areas along with live rock for grazing and shelter. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in length.
