Sargocentron coruscum, commonly known as the Squirrelfish, is a captivating addition to a marine aquarium, prized for its vivid red colouring and distinctive large eyes adapted for nocturnal activity. This species is best suited for aquarists with some experience due to its specific care requirements.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank if multiple individuals are desired.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to match their natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide adequate swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to low lighting preferred to mimic natural crepuscular conditions.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement is ideal, replicating reef edge or lagoon environments.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork and caves for hiding during daylight hours. Position in the mid to lower levels of the aquarium.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches).
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates and shrimp. Careful consideration is advised when housing with delicate reef inhabitants.
