Sargocentron bullisi, commonly known as the Bullisi Squirrelfish, is a captivating nocturnal species prized for its vibrant red coloration and distinctive large eyes. This small squirrelfish is best suited for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience, as it requires specific husbandry to thrive.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and to accommodate its nocturnal and somewhat shy nature. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of rockwork and caves to offer secure hiding places during daylight hours.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with a variety of peaceful tank mates but should not be housed with very small or slow-moving fish that could be mistaken for prey.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Sargocentron bullisi thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be conducted primarily in the evening or at night to align with its natural activity patterns.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally not aggressive towards corals or invertebrates, care should be taken as it may prey on small crustaceans or ornamental shrimp.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is preferred to mimic its natural crepuscular environment. Water flow should be moderate to low, ensuring the fish can rest comfortably without excessive current.
Origin and Size: Native to Western Atlantic waters. This species reaches a maximum size of approximately 15 cm in captivity.
