Pterocaesio pisang is a visually captivating snapper species prized for its vibrant colouration and active schooling nature. This large variant is best suited to experienced marine aquarists who can provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Pterocaesio pisang thrives in groups and should be kept in schools of at least 5 individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. It coexists well with other non-aggressive fish but may be outcompeted by more aggressive species.
Diet: This species is carnivorous, feeding primarily on zooplankton and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to their active schooling behaviour and size, a minimum tank volume of 300 litres is recommended. Provide open swimming areas with moderate water flow and stable water parameters. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, Pterocaesio pisang may occasionally nip at small invertebrates or delicate corals, so monitor closely if housed in reef systems.
Origin and Size: Native to Indo-Pacific waters, this species can reach a sizeable length, making it a striking addition to larger marine aquariums.
