Chaetodipterus faber, commonly known as the batfish, is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium. This medium-sized, tank-bred specimen offers hobbyists a peaceful and visually striking fish with its laterally compressed body and distinctive silvery colouring.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended due to the species’ size and specific tank requirements. It is suitable for intermediate to advanced marine aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Chaetodipterus faber is generally peaceful and can be housed with other non-aggressive fish species. Avoid keeping with very small or highly territorial fish to prevent stress or injury.
Diet: This omnivorous species thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres is advised to accommodate its swimming needs and adult size. Provide ample open swimming space along with some rockwork or artificial structures for shelter.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and healthy.
Placement: Batfish prefer mid to upper water column swimming areas. Ensure the tank is well-covered as they can be jumpers.
