Alectis indica, known as the Indian Threadfish, is a visually impressive member of the Carangidae family. This small variant is suitable for marine aquariums with ample space and experienced keepers who can meet its specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced due to size and temperament considerations.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; may show territorial behaviour especially in confined spaces. Best housed with similarly sized or larger robust tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce stress.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can swim freely. Provide open swimming areas with some hiding spots.
Origin: Indian Ocean and Western Pacific regions.
Maximum Size: Up to 60 cm in the wild; smaller in captivity but expect growth beyond the small size variant.
Reef Safe: With Caution – may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential for maintaining health. This species benefits from a well-established aquarium with mature biological filtration.
