The Yellowtail Snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus) is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its bright yellow tail and streamlined body marked with a distinctive yellow stripe. This species is native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea, and is a popular choice for large marine aquariums due to its active swimming behaviour and striking appearance.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a well-maintained, spacious aquarium with stable water parameters.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be semi-aggressive towards smaller or more timid tankmates. Best kept with similarly sized or larger fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as shrimp, krill, and small fish. Supplement with marine pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish healthy and active.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, allowing plenty of open swimming space. Provide hiding spots with live rock formations.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 50 cm (20 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May prey on smaller invertebrates and fish; not recommended for delicate reef tanks with small or slow-moving species.
