Macolor niger, commonly known as the Black and White Snapper, is a visually impressive marine fish prized by experienced hobbyists. This medium-sized snapper features a distinctive black and white pattern that becomes more pronounced with age, making it a captivating centrepiece in larger marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Macolor niger is semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially as it matures. It is best housed with similarly sized or larger robust fish. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species to prevent stress or predation.
Diet: Carnivorous. Offer a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space. Provide plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas to mimic its natural reef-associated habitat.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow replicates natural reef conditions and supports fish health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. Macolor niger may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish, so it is not recommended for delicate reef setups with small or sessile invertebrates.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 40 cm in captivity.
