Lutjanus kasmira, commonly referred to as the Bluebanded Snapper, is a visually stunning species prized for its bright yellow body adorned with vivid blue horizontal stripes. This snapper is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking an active and eye-catching addition to their tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a suitably large aquarium to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may display mild territorial behaviour, especially in confined spaces. Best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its active swimming nature and potential adult size, a minimum tank volume of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No specialised lighting is required.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to maintain oxygenation and simulate the fish’s natural environment.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming areas along with some rockwork or artificial structures for shelter and resting spots. Avoid overcrowding to minimise territorial disputes.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, they may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish, so caution is advised in reef setups with vulnerable species.
Additional Notes: Regular water changes and maintaining excellent water quality are essential for the health of this species. Monitor behaviour closely when introducing to community tanks.
