The Myrichthys colubrinus, often referred to as the Harlequin or Zebra Moray Eel, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Its distinctive black and white banded pattern adds a dramatic flair to any tank setup.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, this eel can coexist with a variety of tank mates but may prey on smaller fish or invertebrates. It is best housed with larger, non-aggressive species. Avoid keeping with very small or slow-moving fish.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, the Harlequin Moray Eel thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and specialised frozen marine preparations. Feeding should be done 2-3 times per week.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and hiding. The aquarium should include plenty of rockwork and crevices to mimic its natural habitat and offer shelter.
Water Parameters and Care: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred, and lighting should be subdued to replicate its natural crevice-dwelling behaviour.
Additional Notes: This species is not tank-bred and may require acclimatisation. Handle with care as moray eels can deliver a strong bite if provoked.
