Haemulon melanurum, commonly called the Melanurum Grunt, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its distinctive colouring and peaceful nature. This species is best suited for large marine aquariums where it can swim freely and exhibit natural schooling behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Haemulon melanurum coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species. It is recommended to keep them in groups to mimic their natural schooling habits, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplementing with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish is beneficial.
Tank Requirements: Due to their active swimming nature and potential size, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is advised. Provide plenty of open swimming space along with rockwork or coral structures to offer shelter and resting spots.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to ensure optimal health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may occasionally nip at smaller invertebrates or sessile animals. Monitor behaviour closely if housed in reef systems.
Haemulon melanurum is a rewarding addition to large marine aquariums for enthusiasts seeking a peaceful, schooling fish with striking appearance and engaging behaviour.
