Haemulon plumierii, commonly referred to as the Blue-striped Grunt, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its vibrant blue horizontal stripes and peaceful nature. This large snapper species is suitable for experienced aquarists with spacious marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended due to its size and specific husbandry needs. Regular water quality monitoring and stable conditions are essential.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Haemulon plumierii coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish to prevent stress. It is best kept singly or in groups of similar size to reduce territorial disputes.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily.
Tank Requirements: Due to its large adult size, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space. A well-established aquarium with stable parameters and moderate water flow is ideal.
Lighting and Placement: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Provide open swimming areas with some rockwork or caves for shelter.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution – may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so not recommended for delicate reef setups.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including Caribbean waters.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
