The Large Longhorn Cowfish (Lactoria cornuta) is a captivating species prized for its distinctive horn-like protrusions and box-shaped body. This marine fish is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements and sensitivity.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Longhorn Cowfish can coexist with a variety of tank mates but should not be housed with aggressive or fin-nipping species. It is best kept singly or in a large, well-established community tank to reduce stress.
Diet: This omnivorous species thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is advised. The aquarium should have ample open swimming space with stable water parameters and gentle water flow.
Care Notes: The Longhorn Cowfish is sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes in environment. It produces a toxic substance when stressed or threatened, so care should be taken during handling and when selecting tank mates.
