Acanthurus monroviae, commonly called the Monrovia Tang, is a captivating species of surgeonfish prized for its vibrant blue and yellow hues. This extra large specimen is best suited for experienced hobbyists who can provide the space and care it requires.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Monrovia Tang is generally semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards conspecifics and similar tang species. It is best kept singly or in a large, well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding places and swimming space. Compatible tank mates include other robust fish species that can hold their own but avoid small, timid fish that may be stressed.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active swimming nature and potential adult size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. Provide ample live rock for grazing and shelter. Maintain stable water parameters with regular water changes and efficient filtration.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Monrovia Tang may nip at some sessile invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed or stressed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard moderate lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents helps maintain fish health and encourages natural behaviour.
Origin: Native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, particularly around the West African coast.
Maximum Size: Up to approximately 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
