Canthigaster rostrata, known as the Caribbean sharpnose puffer, is a charming and active species popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts. This small pufferfish is recognised for its distinctive markings and curious behaviour, making it a fascinating addition to a well-maintained reef or fish-only tank.
Care Level
Moderate care is recommended due to their specific dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality. Regular monitoring and maintenance are essential to keep this species healthy.
Temperament and Compatibility
Canthigaster rostrata is generally peaceful but can display territorial behaviour, especially towards other puffers or similar-shaped fish. It is best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spaces. Avoid housing with very small or slow-moving fish that may be harassed.
Diet
This species is omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods. A varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised puffer pellets is recommended. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural grazing habits.
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons)
- Water Parameters: Stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4
- Lighting: Standard marine aquarium lighting suitable for reef or fish-only setups
- Water Flow: Moderate flow to replicate natural reef environments
- Placement: Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots
Reef Compatibility
With caution. Canthigaster rostrata may nip at corals or sessile invertebrates, so it is not considered fully reef safe. Suitable for fish-only or mixed tanks without delicate corals.
Origin and Size
Native to the Caribbean Sea and western Atlantic Ocean. Typically grows up to 10 cm (4 inches) in length.
