Hemiscyllium ocellatum, commonly known as the Bamboo Shark, is a fascinating and hardy species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This large tank-bred specimen offers an excellent opportunity to keep a unique shark that adapts well to captive conditions.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Bamboo Sharks require stable water parameters and a suitably sized aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and slow-moving, making them compatible with many non-aggressive tank mates. However, they may prey on small fish or invertebrates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (40 gallons) for juveniles, but larger tanks of 300 litres (80 gallons) or more are recommended for adults to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking their natural crepuscular activity patterns.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to replicate natural reef or lagoon environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock or caves for shelter and resting areas. The substrate should be soft sand to protect their delicate undersides.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 90 cm (35 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May consume small invertebrates and fish, so not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Tank-bred specimens like this one are preferred for their acclimatisation to captive conditions and reduced impact on wild populations.
