Zoanthus spp. (Pink) are a popular choice among marine aquarium hobbyists for their vivid colouration and dynamic polyp movement. These soft corals belong to the genus Zoanthus, known for their colonial growth and ease of care, making them suitable for a variety of reef setups.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant colour and healthy growth. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a balanced spectrum work well.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to keep polyps gently swaying without causing them to close up. Avoid strong direct currents.
Placement: Place Zoanthus spp. on live rock or coral plugs in areas where they receive moderate light and water movement. Ensure adequate spacing from aggressive corals to prevent chemical warfare or overgrowth.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate aquarists. Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. They coexist well with most peaceful reef inhabitants but may be outcompeted by faster-growing corals.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic but will benefit from occasional feeding of fine particulate foods such as phytoplankton or coral-specific liquid supplements.
Additional Notes: Zoanthus spp. can produce palytoxin, a potent toxin; handle with care and use gloves when fragging or relocating.
