Tridacna squamosa, commonly known as the Scaly Clam, is a visually striking giant clam species prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its unique shell texture and vibrant mantle colours. This premium 9cm specimen is suitable for experienced hobbyists with established reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to specific lighting and water quality needs.
Lighting Requirements: Strong, high-intensity lighting such as metal halide or high-output LED systems is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate area with ample light exposure. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic algae, but occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialized clam foods can promote health.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution; avoid housing with predatory or aggressive fish and invertebrates that may harm the clam.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water parameters and accommodate growth.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 30cm in length under optimal conditions.
Regular water testing and maintenance are crucial to ensure stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels to support shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry and temperature.
