Tridacna squamosa, commonly known as the Scaly Clam, is a spectacular giant clam species prized for its ornate shell and vibrant mantle colours. This premium 8cm specimen is ideal for marine reef aquariums with stable water parameters and strong lighting.
Care and Husbandry: Tridacna squamosa requires intense lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Use high-quality LED or metal halide lighting to ensure optimal growth and vibrant coloration.
Moderate water flow is recommended to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while avoiding excessive turbulence that can cause stress. Placement should be on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where the clam can securely attach itself.
Although primarily photosynthetic, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote health and growth, especially in less mature specimens.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Tridacna squamosa is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the clam’s mantle.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, and low nutrient levels to prevent algae overgrowth.
This clam can reach a maximum size of approximately 30cm in captivity over several years, so a minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to accommodate growth and ensure stable water quality.
