The Blue Scaly Clam (Tridacna squamosa) is a captivating invertebrate known for its striking blue mantle and unique shell adorned with prominent scales. This clam reaches approximately 10cm in size, making it a manageable addition for experienced marine aquarists.
Care and Husbandry: Tridacna squamosa thrives under moderate to strong lighting, as it relies heavily on photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within its tissues. A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water parameters. Maintain stable temperature (24-27°C), salinity (1.023-1.025 SG), and excellent water quality with low nutrients.
Water flow should be moderate to gentle, ensuring the clam’s mantle is not damaged by strong currents. Placement on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area is essential for optimal health and growth.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna squamosa can benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions or during acclimation.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle. Handle with care to prevent mantle damage.
